Yom Kippur Food and Clothing Drive

Kehila collects non-perishable healthy foods, and lightly-used clothing and home goods before and during Yom Kippur services.

Collection will be October 8, 2019 before and during Kol Nidre service, and October 9, 2019 before and during Yom Kippur services. Clothing and home goods will be collected in a U-Haul rental truck parked in back of Walter Johnson High School. Food will be collected just inside the school’s back door, near the truck. Volunteers are needed to help receive and organize the clothing and food donations starting a half hour before services begin. This work can count as community service for student volunteers.

The food collection is distributed to Manna, a Montgomery County non-profit addressing hunger. The clothing collection is given to the Interfaith Clothing Center, which operates a free store for qualifying area families.

Examples of healthy non-perishable foods include:

  • Canned tuna, chili, beans, vegetables, fruit, tomato or pasta sauce, and juice
  • Dried beans, rice, and pasta
  • Peanut butter
  • Cooking oil

Please bring clean items of clothing or home goods that you would be happy to give a neighbor. Make sure there are no rips and that buttons and zippers are intact and working. Especially needed are:

  • Clothing that teens would enjoy wearing, such as large, black or gray T-shirts and (even ratty!) jeans.
  • Coats, hats, scarves--all warm-weather clothing
  • Large, size 2-6 diapers (NEW!) are always needed
  • Sheets, blankets
  • Bath towels, washcloths, bath rugs

Diane Garfield and Tammy Trocki are the Yom Kippur Food and Clothing Drive coordinators. Please contact one of them to volunteer or with any questions
