10:30 - Adult Ed: Julia Roig: Lessons on domestic healing and peacebuilding from the global arena
Julia Roig is president of PartnersGlobal, an international organization that works to transform conflict, strengthen democratic institutions, and achieve sustainable development. (Our own Jonathan Davidson chairs the PartnersGlobal board). As social tensions and polarization at home have dramatically increased, the experience of peacefully resolving conflicts and helping to repair broken civil societies and damaged democratic institutions in many regions around the world has highlighted some pointers as to how best we can try and restore a more respectful civil discourse at home and shore up the resiliency of our most treasured institutions, especially those protecting the freedom of speech, public assembly, religious tolerance, democratic rights, and the rule of law. The deterioration of respectful civil and political discourse in this country has led many to reflect on the parallel decline of civil discourse abroad and a corresponding resurgence of autocracy, populism, and intolerance around the world. Conflict resolution experts suggest this is a time for self-reflection, both as a society and in our individual, personal approach to dealing with the troubling social and political environment around us.
