Green Kehila

The Green Committee is cooking up all kinds of great ideas for making Kehila an environmentally conscious community. We hope to certify Kehila as an official green community through a wonderful interfaith group called Green Faith. Since we do not have a building, we already have a big head start.

Previous years' activities included an e-recycling opportunity (More), a Green Action Day (More), and a Bike to Kehila day (More). The photo shows Karla Dinowitz, Barb Pearlman, and Hazel Becker at the plant swap in November 2011.

We are also looking into making our Sunday morning noshes, onegs and Kehila simcha celebrations more environmentally friendly. Tips for being an environmental mensch:

  1. When you take a fall walk, bring a bag and pick up trash. If certain members of your group respond to competition, see who can collect the most trash.
  2. Buy fair trade, organic coffee. Good for you, and for the coffee farmers.
  3. In winter especially, change (or wash your reusable) furnace filter monthly. Filters with less dust work more efficiently.
  4. Unplug TVs, computers, coffee makers and other small electricity-using appliances and gadgets at night to save energy. Putting them on a strip makes it easier to turn them all off with one click.
