Local Environment Activism: Learn from the Pros
This panel discussion features environmental activists (Kehila’s own) Sarah Morse, executive director of Little Falls Watershed Alliance, (Kehila’s own) Mark Posner, volunteer legislative chair for the Maryland Sierra Club, and Jillian Semaan, director of food campaigns at Green America to discuss what we can do on the local level to address climate change.
Sarah Morse is the executive director and founding member of Little Falls Watershed Alliance, an environmental stewardship group that advocates for natural areas in lower Montgomery County and northwest Washington, DC. In addition to storm water management issues LFWA also addresses habitat restoration and stricter application of county environmental regulations. In this arena, Sarah has supervised three meadow restorations, helped write the environmental standards for the recent rezoning of Westbard Sector and testified many times on behalf of the environment before state and county legislators..
Mark Posner serves as the volunteer Legislative Chair for the Maryland Sierra Club, helping to lead and administer a wide-ranging lobbying effort before the Maryland General Assembly. Each session, the Sierra Club prioritizes a small number of bills and also submits testimony in favor of dozens of others.
Jillian Semaan is the Director of Food Campaigns for Green America. As a political appointee in the Obama Administration, Jillian served as Chief of Staff for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and as the Director of School and Community Garden Initiatives for several years. One of her roles was to create and implement government initiatives around sustainable agriculture that focused on childhood nutrition, food desserts and disadvantaged communities in urban America. Jillian has extensive campaign experience in promoting sustainable agriculture nationwide and creating strategic partnerships. Jillian has spent the last couple years working with non-profits focusing on food insecurity issues, regenerative agriculture, finding solutions to mitigate the climate crisis, and diversifying the agriculture sector. With Green America she addresses our food systems by advocating for regenerative agriculture, discussing soil health solutions and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
