December brings the first of this year's two 3-part series, which will continue into January and feature Jonathan Ray, associate professor of Jewish studies at Georgetown University. He holds a B.A. from Tufts University in History and Religion and a Ph.D. in Jewish History from The Jewish Theological Seminary. Prof. Ray specializes in medieval and early modern Jewish history, focusing on the Sephardic world. His research explores the convivencia, or coexistence, between Christian, Muslim and Jewish societies in Iberia and throughout the broader Mediterranean region and he has written two books on this subject. Kehilaites who attended the retreat in May and experienced his dynamic yet erudite teaching style overwhelmingly asked for an encore.
Prof. Ray’s series continues into January. After that, we will hear from attorney Charles Fax, one of the lawyers who worked on the case seeking reparations for Hungarian Holocaust survivors. Then in late January, Prof. Michael Brenner of American University, a Kehila favorite, will begin a three-part series on European Jewish history since World War II, which continues last year’s popular series on modern Jewish history.
