Naomi Daremblum is a political scientist whose work has focused on democracies in crisis in Europe & Latin America. She has had teaching appointments at NYU and The New School. She has taught and written on a wide range of subjects, from the rise of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela to the literature of Isabel Allende. Her pieces have been published in magazines such as The New Republic. She currently teaches in Lifelong Learning Institutes at Montgomery College & Johns Hopkins Osher. Her lecture will highlight the Jewish presence that has existed in the Caribbean since the 16th century and was backbone for the creation of trading and colonial empires that span the world. She will tell this incredible story of tragedy, reinvention and early, if little known, emancipation
