Historian, author and documentarian Jonathan Brent has since 2009 been the Executive Director and CEO of The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, a singular institution that was founded in Vilnius (Vilna in Yiddish) in the 1920s and is now located in New York. In 2014, he initiated The YIVO Vilna Collection Project, an international effort to conserve and digitize all of YIVO’s pre-WW II collections in New York City and Vilnius.
In July of this year, Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded Jonathan one of her nation’s highest honors, the Cross of the Knight of the Order for Merits to Lithuania, in recognition both of his work in promoting cooperation between Lithuania and YIVO and of the preservation of the prewar Jewish archives of Lithuania through the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Collections project. Before joining YIVO, Jonathan was Humanities Senior Editor and then Editorial Director at Yale University Press..
