10:30 - Adult Ed: Eliyanna Adler on “Poland’s Jewish Past in the Present"
Penn State University scholar, student and teacher Eliyana Adler will explore recent and intriguing developments in Eastern Europe, especially Poland: the increasing interest in the life, culture and history of the annihilated 1000-year-old Jewish community and the series of non-governmental institutions devoted to exploration, education, and sometimes exploitation of aspects of the Polish Jewish past. An expert on Eat European Jewry, Eliyana is completing a book about Polish Jews who survived WWII in the unoccupied realms of the USSR and also starting a new one about memorial books. In light of concern over the current Polish government's attitude towards the Holocaust and Polish-Jewish history, her talk will provide insight into Polish society today and also the ongoing impact of the Jewish presence in Eastern Europe.
